Background on the project

The starting point for this project was a Design challenge at Tigerspike London with women in tech club. We had two hours in groups to create a product to help address the challenge of diversity and inclusion in tech.

I have included the work done within our group in that session and I have built upon it since the event to create the first MVP.

Problem statement

Tech companies are experiencing growing pressure to diversify their workforce which is predominantly white, Asian, and male. The increased public scrutiny has resulted in some larger tech companies disclosing their employee information, which indicates little progress. A recent survey of the top 9 tech companies in Silicon Valley by Fortune reveals that on average, women comprise about one-third of the workforce. That gap expands the higher up you go in an organization, with the best company showing women holding 29% of leadership jobs. In general, companies made slightly better progress on ethnic diversity than they did on increasing their percentages of female employees, although not in leadership roles.

Empathize

We were given various data from around the world around the subject of diversity and inclusion. We wrote ideas around what it meant to us then grouped the ideas under subheadings.

Personas

Next, we created personas in pairs, our made 3 personas. Then we voted on our favourite persona.

Define

With Sarah in mind we brainstormed Ideas around our headings we initially created. We each came up with three ideas that related to those headings. We voted on our favourites.

The pitch

Diversity and inclusion is on top of every tech companies agendas right now. Everyones talking about it but it's not enough to talk about it or just slap a banner on a website. Unconscious Bias is what it says on the tin unconscious, the point is we can't always see our own bais and creating an environment by which we feel we can raise it is easier said than done. Someone like Sarah who is junior in the business might feel very exposed to tell a manager "do you realise your hiring people like you".

Our idea was to create a product to help large organisations stay on track, build faith, be accountable and drive change. Built upon the steps, identify, learn and change.

Building upon the idea

Ideate

As a group, we discussed our chosen idea to present to the rest of the teams. It was an amalgamation of a couple of the favourites.
